[quot]Its publications arm, Tate Publishing, faces having to dump up to 12,000 catalogues that have been printed for the Pop Life exhibition at Tate Modern, which contain the offending image of a 10-year-old Shields. It has had 10,000 paperback catalogues printed, priced at £24.99 each, and 2,000 hardbacks, which were meant to sell for £35.00. If they had all sold at full value they would have netted Tate almost £320,000.
But the gallery would face another backlash if it decided to press ahead and sell the unamended catalogues, after a storm of protest regarding its decision to show Richard Prince's work, titled Spiritual America. As a "temporary measure" a number have been made available for sale, a Tate spokesman said, with a sticker placed "on legal advice" over the nude image of Shields. But what will happen to the remainder is still in doubt. The spokesman added: "We are in ongoing discussions with legal advisers about the catalogue." The Pop Life exhibition opened on October 1 and runs until January 17. Tate Modern withdrew Spiritual America on the eve of the exhibition opening, after a visit by the Metropolitan police.
The force consulted the Crown Prosecution Service about whether its display breached the Obscene Publications Act. One children's campaigner described it as a "magnet" for paedophiles. The provocative picture shows Shields standing naked in a bath, with a heavily made up face and oiled torso. Richards' 1983 work was a photograph of a photograph. The original was taken in 1975 by Garry Gross for Playboy publication Sugar 'n' Spice. It was commissioned by Shield's mother, Teri, who wanted to turn her daughter into a child star. Critics have interpreted Prince's work as a comment on the hypocrisy of American values. Tate later replaced the nude photograph with one of the actress taken 30 years later, titled Spiritual America IV.[/quot]

(Arthur Rothstein)
